Largest Trachypithecus Phayres community in China seen in Dehong

Pubdate:2018-01-30

At the beginning of January, Zheng Shanhe, a volunteer from Dehong Natural and Ecological Protection team spotted more than 200 Trachypithecus Phayres while photographing in Xuangang, Mangshi. Trachypithecus Phayre is an endangered species and listed as national first-level protected animal. The community seen in Xuangang turns out to be the largest one of the endangered animal in China.

According to Chen Jianwei, a PHD supervisor from Beijing Forestry University, Trachypithecus Phayres mainly live in broad-leave forest below an altitude of 2700 meters in west of Yunnan, north and east of Burma. According to statistics in 1980s, the number of Trachypithecus Phayres in west Yunnan ranged from 1500 to 2000. By the end of the 20 th century, larger number of trees in tropical and south subtropical primitive forest had been cut. Consequently the habitat of Trachypithecus Phayres narrowed down and the number of the animal dropped sharply.

Chen Jianwei maintained that the Trachypithecus Phayres community seen in Dehong is the largest one in China. Moreover, it is not only one in this region. Dehong deserves the title of “Home of Trachypithecus Phayres ”.

Dehong has already taken effective steps to protect Trachypithecus Phayres and their habitats. It is learnt that Dehong Prefecture has attached great importance to ecological construction in recent years. To protect the environment in Dehong, relevant departments have effectively integrated ecological protection and poverty alleviation work.
